QUESTION
Does the number of hours spent watching television has an impact on the student’s academic results?
PURPOSE OF STUDY
Some students like to watch television for long hours. And as a result, some of the students did not do well in their academic work. But some of the students can do well although they watch long hours of television. We would like to find out if the number of hours spent on watching television has an impact on student's academic result.
HYPOTHESIS
Null : There is no relationship between number of hours spent watching television and student's academic results.
Research : The more hours spent on watching television, the poorer the student's academic results.
VARIABLES
Independent : Number of hours spent on watching television
Dependent : Student's academic result
Extraneous : Number of hours spent on doing other activities that distract them (eg. playing games)

We did a questionnaire survey for our test on 40 students.
We did accidental sampling.
As a result,
most of the students who did the survey were Year 1s.
And they could not answer 1 of the questions which ask about their GPA score as they does not know what are their GPA score.
Moreover, we need the GPA score to compare the result.
So we need to redo the survey.
Our GPA score data collected was an ordinal data.

After knowing the mistake,
we will do a purposive sampling to survey an equal number of males and females who are either Year 2s and Year 3s.
So we will try to obtain a raw score of their GPA so that the data will be a scale data.

Summary Of Survey Process
- Everybody in the group were asked to look for respondents to complete our survey.
- Respondents of any gender and race to complete our survey.
- Respondents must be from Year 2 and Year 3.

After we have obtained the raw data, we want to compare 2 scale.
- Variables (hrstv vs gpascore)
Hence, we could only perform Pearson's R.
But first of all, we need to make sure our data fits the 4 assumptions.
The 1st 2 asumptions are made about our data.
1) All observations are made independent of each other.
2) The dependent variable is normally distributed at each value of the independent variable.
The next 2 assumptions can be verified by the scatter plot.
3) The dependent variable has the same variability at each value of the independent variable.
4)The relationship between the dependent and ndependent variables should be linear.

We also formulated that the equation of the linear regression and it can be listed to predict the GPA score a student may get based on the number of hours one spent watching TV.

GPA score = (-0.169) x hrstv + 3.272
Conclusion

Pearson's R = 0.532
P = 0.0001 (p < 0.001)
In conclusion,
we found a negative, moderately strong and significant relationship between number of hours spent watching TV and student's academic result.
R sq linear = 0.283
This means that 28.3% of the variation in a student's academic results can be explained by the linear equation while the other 71.7% of the total variation in the student's academic result is unexplained.
Reflection
It have been a great and enjoyable experience doing this research.
And we are thankful because during the course of this research, we did not encounter much problem.
And finally,
